Studio Visit: Florian Tomballe

Hands-down one of the most interesting sculptors I’ve come across since relocating to Amsterdam, Belgian artist Florian Tomballe welcomed me to his expansive, light-filled studio a few weeks ago. After seeing his work on Instagram, I wanted to check out the source of his imagination, materials, technique, and production at a studio in a quiet neighborhood of Antwerp. Charming and energetic, Florian gave me a grand tour through a maze of highly-crafted maquettes, charcoal sketches, clay, plaster, wax, and styrofoam. We discussed his roots (part of a family of talented artists), education (classically trained at Royal Academy Antwerp), and inspiration (deconstructed brutalist figures, antiquity, and portraiture among many other things). His works are like love children produced by Egyptian, Ancient Roman, and Italian Renaissance movements. The fluid style is completely his own and his passion for experimentation is present in every piece.
