Liam Paton is a London-based composer and immersive sound designer. We met in 2018 to discuss some art x innovation collaborations after a kind intro by Colin Davis. During our chats, his drive and excitement for challenging, one-of-a-kind work is evident. He looks for new, challenging projects without fear, which is why it’s no surprise his studio Resonate is in high demand. Resonate, a multi-award winning music and sound design studio, specializing in original compositions for the advertising, broadcast and digital industries. The studio also develops immersive audio for physical environments and interactive installations and has exhibited work all over the world. The client list is impressive, including Audi, Adidas, Max Factor, Burberry, Google, and Paul Smith, among many others.
Here are 5 Things We Learned about Liam.
What made you...you?
Borrowing a 4-track recorder from school over one weekend when I was around 13 started this audio journey I’ve been on ever since. I loved being able to record and layer sounds on top of each other and create these crazy soundscapes. They generally sounded terrible but at that point it was all about the process rather than the results.
When are you happiest?
Playing the piano is a very happy time where I can switch off from everything else. It’s rare these days not to be constantly multi-tasking so I like the fact that I can’t look at my laptop or phone when playing the piano.
Would you rather have a muse or be a muse?
I’d rather have a muse as it’s always good to have a constant source of inspiration!
Who do you admire?
I admire Sean Rogg who has created the Waldorf project, an immersive art project. I was lucky enough to get to one of the events a couple of years ago and it blew my mind. I still talk about this experience to everyone I meet and I can’t recommend it enough if you get the chance to go.
What is important?
To always keep learning and never lose that naive enthusiasm that puts you in situations that are out of your comfort zone.
